Hi folks,
I run a small cycle courier and cargobike business in Sheffield (the hilliest city in the country)!! Getting fed up with the severe physicality of the job here and I am now casting my eye around to find a town / city to relocate to. Chester keeps popping up on my radar as a possibility. It's flat, relatively compact and is a cycle demonstration city. For me that's enough to get me interested.
Does Chester already have such a service?
If so does anyone have a link for them?
How pro cycling are the local council? I thought they would be great but looking at the comments on here I'm not so sure. Having said that anywhere would be better than sheffield! The council here are utterly useless!
Would be looking to operate a dedicated messenger service within 2 mile radius of city centre plus cargobikes to cover larger loads. Would consider pedicab service for weekends moving customers between pubs / restaurants in the city centre.
Any feedback you could give me specifically to Chester and any of the local movers and shakers within the council would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in anticipation
Mike

Hi
I am not aware of any cargo bikes in Chester though there used to be the odd butcher's bike. I think it's a great idea but pedi cabs have never taken off.
City centre penetration will be an issue though in theory this will be tackled by the CDT status but dont hold your breath.
Good luck

The council is becoming much more cycle friendly since the creation of the new Cheshire West and Chester council. However, LGR has been a distraction and has perhaps contributed to the slow progress with the Cycle Demonstration Town initiative. The appointing of staff to the new council has been slow, and only the top tiers of management have been appointed so far. We are waiting to see who the movers and shakers will be.
The city centre has a great deal of pedestrianisation, but cycling in the pedestrian area has been the subject of controversy.
I suppose you could provide a service to organisations with multiple sites across the city. Some might see it as a visible demonstration of their green credentials. Some banks, the University of Chester, and the council itself have multiple sites in the city.
Chester is an extremely popular Friday and Saturday out destination for a wide area, including people who live in North Wales. It is teeming with people eating and drinking until late throughout the year. Your cabs would need to be vomit proof and you would need a thick skin to transport customers between pubs and restaurants on weekend nights. It is likely you would get customers, many of whom would be doing it for a laugh.
I haven't noticed any cycle couriers in Chester, so you may have little or no competition.
Ferrying shoppers and their purchases from shops in the pedestrianised area to their cars in car parks could be another possibility.
Could work out, who knows?

great idea, chester city is quite compact really, visitors flock in on race days, roman heritage is also very popular with foreign visitors, many usually take easy walks round the old city walls , maybe a viable buisness considering the amount of guest houses/hotels just outside the city centre.
