Go on, has anyone worked out a commuting route from Chester to Liverpool? I would ideally haul the bike in on the train in the morning and then cycle back from Liverpool in the evening but is this possible at all?

Hi I do that commute regularly, and have a route worked out from Wallasey to Chester at least. Its not the most direct route, but if your using it a training or enjoyment it works, I'd say it was 90% traffic free as well. Brief explanation A41 past Camel Lairds (this is prob the worst bit), Rock Ferry/Port Sunlight (either bypass or through the towns), turn left near the Hotel (Village Leisure) on your left, brings you round the back Bromborough Retail Park, you can continue right along this through Eastham Country Park, cross the A41 heading toward Eastham Station (Eastham Rake), past that turn left (Benty Heath Ln) left again onto Hooton Rd, before going over the railway line there is an opening and from here follow the footpath (off road) until your each a gate, head left right after the gate then right again (I think you are now on a cycle route from here) follow this through a farm, towards capenhurst, down a country lane (still cycle route) cross the road (near Costco now) continue following the route along the train track, left at the end, back on the A41 turn right before crossing the A41 then drop down onto the Canal and follow that and then your in Chester.
Admitadly I tend to get the train and do Capenhurst to Chester in the morning and back again in the evening, or if I missed the train continue onto Hooton or Eastham. If you want any more help let me know (its not a brilliant description), or even do a trial run one weekend.
Good luck

Hey! Many thanks for this - I'm going to pore over an OS map to follow this route but I think I pretty much get it. I'll give you a shout here if I come unstuck. Thanks again.

From Hamilton Square head towards Cammell lairds, then down Cambletown road behind the a41 left hand side, just after the crossing, follow to end, cut across a41 roundabout, and up through rock fery and Port sunlight, to the Total Fitness, follow wirral coastal trail route, blue signs to Eeastham country park. from here head towards the church and K cycles on crossroads, head towards the little Tesco metro and go straight ahead towards willaston, eventually getting to Hooton /Willaston, then join route 56 of the sustrans national cycle network to chester, a bit of a drawn out route but nice and quiet in the summer and partly on quiet roads and off road sections.
