Train travel with a cycle anybody done this?
Friends have invited me to the Isle of Wight for a camping trip, of the options available, one of them is taking my bike (non foldable) packed with panniers down on the train?
Is it feasible to do? is their special tickets i need? or special times i need to travel?
all advice welcome

I regularly take a bike or bikes on trains from Chester and across UK, often with panniers.
Different companies have different policies. Booking is available with most companies but mandatory on Cross Country and Virgin.
Cross Country will be be your main carrier to Portsmouth and in all but the most recent conversions has 4 bike spaces of the meat hook kind. The bike space is next to the quiet zone.
Give it a try - watch out for the bike symbol to show you which door to use

I have done it quite a few times - you need to get a reservation if doing anything other than a local journey - some trains will refuse to take you without. I have even had a conductor who tried to refuse me even when I did have one - he said he could only take two bikes and there were 5 of us with reservations so three would have to wait 24 hrs till the next days train! Some trains have dedicated spaces - but often these are full of luggage, prams, etc.
Sometimes it works brilliantly!
